Fashion Hackathon builds WiFi apps for fashion and retail

Cloud4Wi congratulates the winners of the San Francisco Fashion Hackathon, which took place recently at our headquarters in the city’s fashion district. Presented with the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance, Inc. (SFFAMA), the Fashion Hackathon took place Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

The two-day competition drew 49 participants who competed by developing innovative apps and concepts for the fashion and retail industries using Cloud4Wi’s Volare WiFi analytics and marketing platform.

Divided into six teams, the hackathon participants were asked to create a Cloud4Wi Volare application in one of three areas: customer engagement, in-store operations, and business intelligence.

Besides Andrea Calcagno, CEO and Co-Founder at Cloud4Wi, the other hackathon judges were Gina Bibby, Principal at TF Law Group and Founder at Two Tunics Project, and Joe Jasin, Managing Director of DNA Partners, LLC, an early stage venture investment firm.

The three winning teams and their entries were:

1st place

Team Squirtle Squad

Its entry, called Perstyles, is a personal stylist application that uses in-store WiFi to leverage user data obtained via Volare’s API to help retail businesses provide optimal fashion selections and support to consumers. Team members were Jared Tan, Janet Lee, Keith Wong, and Atom Crimi.

"By providing high-end outfit recommendations via tablets as a sophisticated software service, any employee — regardless of experience — can provide the best recommendations which in turn, will boost sales for the company," said Jared Tan, a member of the Perstyles team.

2nd place

Team Italian Job

Team Italian Job presented an app concept that uses in-store WiFi to bridge the gap between online and brick-and-mortar retail, noting that while online retail has generated tremendous interest, companies like Amazon, Fabletics, and Warby Parker are expanding their storefront presence.

3rd place

Team Orcathon

Team Orcathon presented “Shoppen – Instore shopping made easy” that matches customers with merchandise likely to interest them and helps shoppers make appointments with sales associates to try on the fashions that interest them.

Fashion Hackathon shows technology driving retail success

I was very impressed by all six teams and their understanding of retail challenges and their ability to intelligently confront them through technology,” said hackathon judge Andrea Calcagno, CEO and Co-Founder of Cloud4Wi. “The teams proved that smart retailers and fashion people can use technology, including our Volare platform, to help keep instore shopping and exciting and unique experience that customers still treasure.
